Triscuit & the Home Farming Movement – $20 Visa GC giveaway

Have you noticed the new Triscuit packaging? Four million boxes of Triscuits now include plantable herb seed cards. The Original Triscuits include basil seeds, and the Reduced Fat Triscuits include dill seeds. But why?

Triscuit is working with Urban Farming, a non-profit organization, to create 50 new community-based home farms throughout the United States. They have not only included the seeds in their Triscuit boxes, but they also launched a Website that includes information about growing vegetables at home, a crop guide, community forums and more. I love the “Start Your Own Farm” tool that lets you know what will grow and when to grow it based on your zip code.

My daughter and I made our first attempt this year to grow vegetables in our backyard….starting with tomatoes. We do not have much room in our backyard, but we were able to get a few tomatoes to grow.

It was a fun project, and I want to try more soon, but because I have a very small backyard, I looked into community gardens in North Texas. Unfortunately the ones near me are full. I put my name on a waiting list, and maybe in a few years I can rent a plot! I’m #87 on the waiting list for the garden nearest to me, so apparently the concept is quite popular.

Until I am able to rent a community garden plot, I am going to look into the recommendations from the Triscuit Home Farming Website to see if I can set up a 4×4 space in my backyard that will get enough sun.

Win it!

I am giving away a $20 Visa gift card to one lucky reader.

In February, I have such hopes and dreams of a bountiful harvest. March/April is wonderful as I plant my little seeds and sprouts. My garden is growing well in May, but then the slugs, deer, and ants. I also have two boys who somehow seem to get things tossed into my garden area. Right now, I have beautiful tomatoes and potatoes, but many other items have been lost to extenduating circumstances. I’ll try again next year. My hat is off to those of you who can live off the land, year after year. I’m just thankful for the grocery market down the road.

WE tried our hand at having a vegetable garden in the past, but it didn’t work out. It didn’t work out because the areas that are big enough to plant a garden, don’t get enough sun AND the animals helped themselves to what managed to grow. I stick to flowers.

I don’t have too much experience with home gardening. We have a little balcony right now, and it gets no sun! I want to do tomatoes but I know they won’t thrive out there. I did have a little garden I started by seed when I was a kid, and I’ll never forget pulling up my first carrot! A little early of course…it was only 2 inches!

Every year we plant tomatoes. Some years we get an abundance, other years not so much. Worst experience with Strawberries this year – the birds would not stop eating them. We won’t do the strawberries again.

Hello there! We love gardening, especially for food/herbs. We have two raised vegetable beds, a pumpkin patch, two grapevines, a blueberry bush, wild thyme, and a few other herbs. We are pretty much still novices, but we enjoy doing it and teaching the little ones to love Nature, too.

    Thanks so much!
